How much does glass or window replacement cost in Toronto?
There is no single flat Toronto price that applies to every opening. Two pieces with similar dimensions can have very different installed costs because the material, fabrication, frame, access and installation requirements can be different.

Budgeting only. Final manufacturing dimensions and project scope require confirmation. A simple insert-style replacement is not directly comparable to a full-frame replacement with exterior capping and interior trim.
Residential glass
Do I need to replace the entire window?
Not always. Many residential windows contain a separate insulated glass unit installed inside an existing sash or frame. When the frame, sash and hardware remain serviceable, the failed glass unit can often be replaced without removing the complete window assembly.
Glass-only replacement may make sense when:
- The glass is cracked or broken.
- Moisture or fog appears between panes.
- The sealed insulated unit has failed.
- The frame remains structurally usable.
- The sash and operating hardware still function.
Complete-window replacement may make more sense when:
- The frame is badly deteriorated, warped or damaged.
- Several major components have failed.
- Water problems involve the surrounding assembly.
- The homeowner wants a complete performance or appearance upgrade.
Better question: instead of asking “Is my window broken?”, identify which component actually failed.
Foggy windows
Why is there condensation between the panes?
Fog or moisture trapped between panes commonly indicates failure of the insulated glass unit. The sealed cavity is no longer performing as intended, so cleaning the accessible interior and exterior surfaces will not remove moisture that is physically inside the unit.
1Inspect the window
Determine whether the issue is glass, frame, hardware or a combination.
2Measure the glass
Confirm the dimensions and likely insulated-glass specification.
3Manufacture the replacement
Custom sealed units are normally made to suit the existing opening.
4Replace the failed unit
Where appropriate, the existing frame remains in place.
IGU means Insulated Glass Unit. Depending on the window, it may use double or triple glazing, Low-E coatings, gas fill, different spacers or safety glass.

Commercial glass
Toronto storefront glass is not the same as residential window glass
A storefront may combine aluminum framing, large glass panels, commercial doors, sidelites, transoms, thresholds and door hardware. Before pricing the work, determine whether the failure is glass only, glass plus aluminum, hardware, or a complete entrance/storefront system.
Storefront pricing can be affected by:
- Panel width, height and thickness.
- Tempered, laminated or insulated construction.
- Existing aluminum framing.
- Removal difficulty and public protection.
- Street, interior and loading access.
- Business hours and after-hours requirements.
- Emergency securing before permanent glass is available.
Safety glass
Tempered and laminated glass are different products
Tempered glass
Tempered glass is heat-treated safety glass commonly used in doors, sidelites, showers, storefronts, railings and other safety-sensitive locations. Required holes, notches, cut-outs and edge work are normally completed before tempering.
Because fabrication is completed before the final heat-treatment process, an incorrectly positioned hole or notch can require a new panel rather than a simple on-site adjustment.
Laminated glass
Laminated glass uses multiple layers bonded with an interlayer. When it breaks, the interlayer can help retain pieces. Depending on the application, laminated construction may be chosen for safety, security, sound control or specialized architectural requirements.
Tempered, laminated and tempered-laminated products should not be treated as interchangeable terms. The correct construction depends on the opening and applicable requirements.
Custom fabrication
Why equal square footage can produce very different prices
Consider two pieces of glass with the same width and height. One is a straightforward rectangular panel. The other is a 10 mm shower door with polished edges, hinge cut-outs and handle holes. The amount of glass may be similar, but the manufacturing work is not.
Shower glass
Custom shower measurement can involve overall width and height, wall angles, floor conditions, door width, fixed panels, hinge locations, handles, clamps, notches and hardware clearances.
Mirrors & interior glass
Mirrors, partitions, shelves, tabletops and decorative panels may require polished or bevelled edges, holes, cut-outs, special shapes and different installation methods.
Glass railings
Railing projects can involve specialized tempered or laminated glass, base shoe, spigots, posts, standoffs, handrails, anchoring and site-specific design requirements.
Large panels
Larger glass may require additional installers, suction equipment, carts, larger racks, lift equipment and enough clearance through doors, corridors, stairs or elevators.
Emergency service
Board-up is normally temporary protection
If broken glass leaves a property exposed and the permanent replacement is not immediately available, temporary board-up may be used to secure the opening while the correct replacement is measured and manufactured.

Comparing quotations
Compare the scope, not only the final number
Two companies may quote different amounts because they are including different products or different work. Before deciding, confirm what each quotation actually includes.
Glass specification
Is the product insulated, tempered, laminated, Low-E, tinted or otherwise specified? Is thickness stated where relevant?
Installation
Does the price include delivery, removal, installation, glazing materials, sealant and finishing?
Removal & disposal
Who removes the existing glass, frame or window, and is disposal included?
Access & equipment
Are parking, elevators, lifts, multiple installers or after-hours requirements included?
Tax & extras
Confirm HST and any separate charges instead of comparing headline numbers.
Warranty & responsibility
Understand who supplies the product, who performs the installation and what warranty applies to each part.
Before requesting a quote
Give every company the same information
Take useful photos
Include the complete opening, a close view of the damage, surrounding frame, and interior/exterior views where safe and practical.
Record approximate size
Width and height can help with preliminary planning, but homeowner measurements should not automatically be treated as final manufacturing dimensions.
Describe the property
House, condominium, storefront, office, ground floor or upper floor can immediately clarify access questions.
Describe what failed
“Outer pane cracked,” “fog between panes,” “patio glass shattered” or “storefront exposed” is more useful than simply saying “window broken.”

Toronto glass and window questions
Can I replace just the glass in my window?
Often, yes. If the frame and sash remain serviceable, the failed or damaged glass unit can often be replaced without replacing the complete window.
Is replacing the glass cheaper than replacing the complete window?
Glass-only work can be a smaller scope because the existing frame remains in place. Whether it is the right choice depends on frame, sash, hardware and water-management condition.
Why is my double-pane window foggy?
Moisture between panes commonly indicates failure of the sealed insulated glass unit. Cleaning the accessible surfaces will not remove moisture trapped inside the sealed cavity.
Can cracked double-pane glass be replaced?
Yes. A replacement insulated glass unit can often be manufactured for the existing frame when the frame remains suitable.
Can storefront glass be replaced without changing the aluminum frame?
Often, yes, when the existing aluminum system remains suitable. Glass-only replacement, aluminum repair and complete storefront replacement should be treated as separate scopes.
Can a storefront be boarded temporarily?
Yes. Temporary protection can secure an exposed opening while the permanent glass is measured and manufactured.
Can tempered glass be cut after it is made?
Tempered glass generally cannot be cut or drilled after tempering. Required fabrication is normally completed before the tempering process.
Why can one contractor quote much more than another?
The companies may be pricing different glass specifications, installation methods, finishes, access requirements, equipment, warranties or exclusions. Compare equivalent scope before comparing totals.
